Abstract

Considered as "the most brilliant expositor of the last stage of New Spain's baroque architecture", architect Francisco Antonio Guerrero y Torres was distinguished by his artistic sensibility and practical sense which led him to build notorious buildings, both civilian and ecclesiastic, such as the church of la Enseñanza, the parish of San José, the chapel of the Pocito and today's Palacio de Iturbide, the main Office of the National Bank of Mexico, the Mexico City Museum, etcetera. Nevertheless, the Mansión de Borda on the former street of de San Francisco was one of his most spectacular achievements, given its enormous extension and beauty. And even though this architectonic complex has suffered innumerable alterations throughout the last two centuries, back in its day it was the largest private residence built during the viceregal period, second only to the residence of the marquis of the Oaxaca Valley.
