Abstract

Given that most elementary education schools were built in urban populations and instructed a selected minority of children belonging to a privileged elite, the author highlights the importance of periodic publications such as El Correo de los Niños (Children´s Mail), El Niño Mexicano (The Mexican Child), El Ángel de la Guarda (The Guardian Angel) and La Biblioteca del Niño Mexicano (The Mexican Child´s Library) in the teaching of Mexican history during the Porfirian rule. Those publications were independent from the State, and sought that children would not limit themselves to memorizing dates, places and events, but rather to learn to value the options offered through attractive illustrations and narrations of historical facts.
