Abstract

The author has prepared a guide to understanding the history of the research into that part of the Mayan civilization which settled in what today is Quintana Roo. This region has been of interest to scholars of different disciplines, both Mexican and foreign as well as ancient and modem, on account of its importance as a trading and cultural center in the remote past. This enormous bibliography covers a wide range of works, from chronicles describing the first meetings between natives and Europeans, the exploration of the region, and the conquest and colonization of the Yucatan, to descriptions of archaeological ruins and research efforts of all kinds.
