Abstract
In 1872, I. M. Altamirano sent two "sentimental letters" to Baron de Gostkoski which were published in El Siglo XIX, They come from a period in which the author had totally withdrawn from the public eye, and he wrote them with publication in mind and the simple aim of amusing his readers. Altamirano uses the intimate tone of the epistolary genre to relate both personal information and relevant social happenings to his audience. The lists of friends who visit him and of those whom he has not seen for a while (generally writers) and of the undertakings in which they are engaged reveal information on recent literary activities. Altamirano's "sentimental letters" help expand our knowledge of the literary output of this writer from Guerrero state, reveal relatively unknown personal details about the author, and demonstrate, once again, his clear and accessible style and the unwavering precision of his writing.
