Abstract
The authors highlight Isidoro Epstein’s contribution to the development of science and culture in México. This work is accompanied by a chronology and a biobliohemerographic appendix, where his life and work is briefly presented. Epstein was born in Hofgeismar Germany in 1820 according to some sources, or 1828 according to some others. He studied mathematics, engineering, natural sciences and surveying. He arrived in México in 1851, having left his country due to political prosecution towards those who inclined versus liberal ideas. His presence here was meaningful to the study of statistics; he performed infrastructure works in communications and provided new solutions to improve the mail system in the capital. He also functioned as journalist, teacher and public civil servant, besides standing out in artistic and scientific fields.
