Abstract

Defining himself as a “psychologic barbarian”, Alejandro Jodorowsky was a film maker, poet, actor, mime, playwright, theater director, storyteller and sculptor, follower of Tarot and author of the psychomagic method, achieved through the “poetic, theatric, oneiric and magic acts”, a method seeking the affirmation of the human being. Consi-dered by Mexican authorities to be a harmful foreigner because of his pro-vocative ideas against social, political and religious institutions in the country, those criticizing him demanded his immediate expulsion from Mexico. To protect himself from government censorship, Alejandro made use of pseudonyms, Martín Arena (as a director) and Alberto Goya (as an actor), by means of a “psychomagic act”, in order to achieve “the beneficial psychomagical results that —according to him— were obtained through a name change”. Finally, when filming La montaña sagrada, Jodorowsky was pressured by the authorities into leaving the country; though he was later “forgiven” and returned to Mexico.
