Abstract

Taken from the Diarios del Virreinato kept by the National Library of Mexico in its Manuscript Section, Ignacio González- Polo offers a series of texts about the viceroy count of Gálvez, selected from José Gómez' Diario . Loved and admired both by the higher classes and the townspeople for his simplicity and generosity, the count of Gálvez knew how to earn the love of his subordinates during the short period, a little over a year, that he governed the New Spain (June 17th, 1785 - November 30th, 1786). According to José Gómez' Diario, this viceroy was always in constant communication with both upper and lower classes. He attended to bull fights, cockfighting, fandangos and games of all kinds, as well as drama representations and classical music functions, not letting all this activity take him away from solving problems such as the hunger and poverty of the underprivileged.
