Abstract

Enrique de Olavarría y Ferrari, a Spaniard who arrived in Mexico in 1865, adopted not only the Mexican nationality, but its culture as well. Teacher, journalist, politician, historian and man of letters, Olavarría is considered a great diffuser of the Mexican culture in Europe, and mainly in Spain. He is author of numerous essays, poetry, historical reviews, etc., with his Episodios nacionales mexicanos, made up by 36 novels based in the history of Mexico from 1808 to 1838, and the fourth tome of México a través de los siglos, being his two most well-known works. Furthermore, his activity as a promoter of the Mexican culture was strengthened by the fact that he emphasized the Castilian tongue as the element of union between Mexico and Spain.
