Abstract

In 1828, along with Mexico’s Indepndence, a number of creole writers were summoned for theatrical play contest in Puebla City. The aim of the competition was praising the historical fugure of a rebel Tlaxcalteca general: Xicoténcaltl The Young. Three plyawrights showed to compete: José María Moreno Buenvecino, who submitted Xicoténcaltl: tragedy in five acts; Ignacio Torres Arroyo presented Teutila a similar play also in five acts, and José María Menegino, who staged Xicoténcatl, and horoic comedy in four acts.
