Abstract
Accepting the fact that a universe known as children’s literature exists, there arises a debate surrounding the different elements that make it up: does a children’s culture really exist? How does the reading child emerge as a consumer of this type of literature? This is why the historical analysis of such aspects becomes necessary, to understand the reason why literature is considered a fundamental part in the integral development of children in present times. Countless publications aimed at children written by renowned authors can be found throughout history, from the brothers Grimm to Oscar Wilde, going through Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll and Rafael Pombo, among others. From its entertainment purpose to its educa-tional role, children’s literature represents a vital aspect for our society.
